How serious are you when it comes to taking care of your body?

Last year, I was looking at my picture back in 2012 where I competed in Dragonboat’s World Club Crew Championship with my team. As an athlete, I still remember how I trained so hard to get in shape and be really physically fit. I didn’t have the body of a Manny Pacquiao but I can say my fitness level was an all-time high. But those are just memories now.

It feels really disappointing because I haven’t been in shape for the longest time. I have this vision that when I get older like Sylvester Stallone who by the way is already 72 years old, I’m still fit and healthy.

After I got married last year, I weighed close to almost 176 lbs. My Body Mass Index (BMI) should only be 132 lbs. I read in an article that as we age, our bodies burn fewer calories due to hormonal changes. And if we continue consuming food that contained the same calories but spends fewer calories, then we have a caloric surplus which results in gaining weight over time.

I went back to my room visualizing what I really want over and over again. I made a promise to myself that I will be really intentional in taking care of my body. I am involved in so many things and it takes a lot of energy to accomplish these things.

I started my daily financial muscle building habit last Oct. 2018 where I go out for an exercise in our garage. I used to spend P2-3K a month for a gym membership which I don’t really use. In my case, it was a waste of financial resources.  I realized I can still achieve my goal without spending P24-36k a year. Thanks to Youtube! When you’re married, you become more economical. (lol) Because every peso counts.

Here are some of the things that might help you realize the benefits of being fit and healthy

  1. PREVENT HEALTH RISK FACTORS. Everybody knows this very well but not everyone is willing to put in the effort.  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the no. 1 leading cause of death here in the Philippines is still heart-related diseases. All you need is a garage or whatever space, and 100% commitment to be healthier. Don’t ever forget to eat right as well, that’s 80% of a healthy lifestyle.
  2. MORE ENERGY.  When you are fit and healthy, you can attend to all your commitments. You are more alive and enthusiastic about life. I envisioned myself playing sports with my children at age 60. How about you?
  3. SAVE MONEY. Nobody wants to pay Millions in medical bills. I’ve seen people struggle from this. They lose all their savings because of different health risk factors. Treatments today are more expensive than ever. We don’t want our family members to suffer from this financial coma.  I don’t want that for myself.

The benefits of being fit and healthy are amazing. It saves you from all kinds of headaches, especially in your finances. Building a healthy habit stretches you in the beginning because you are not used to it. But when you do it slowly and progressively, you maximize your total capacity. It only takes a daily habit to change your life.
